It allows you to experience the world through your own eyes, to get to know the culture, even yourself. Traveling alone, however, is not without danger. We always put your safety first, and with proper planning and knowledge you can reduce your risks and make the most of your vacation. To learn more on how to be safe while travelling alone, read our full guide.

1. Plan and Research Thoroughly

Don’t just walk away and not learn a little bit about where you’re going. Get familiar with local customs, culture and rules, so you don’t accidentally offend anyone or break any laws. Learn what is expected of you, such as what to wear or how to conduct yourself.

Organize a list of emergency contacts, including the police or embassy. Think about good places to live and steer clear of more violent neighbourhoods. You can ask others about it in travel forums or reviews, depending on your destination.

2. Choose Accommodations Wisely

Make sure the accommodation is good, particularly from fellow solo travelers. Stay in quality hotels, hostels or holiday apartments with security features such as a 24-hour front desk, keycard entry or a room safe.

Stay centrally, if you can, to reduce the need to drive through unfamiliar, uninhabitable terrain at night.

3. Stay Connected

Be sure to check your phone for local SIM cards before you leave. Talk is the most important thing. Carry a portable charger so that your devices don’t die while traveling.

Be sure to notify trusted family or friends of your itinerary. Call them all the time and tell them what’s going on.

4. Pack Smart

On your own, light travel is not only convenient, but also safer. Don’t stuff yourself full of stuff that someone will pick off or put you at a standstill during a crisis.

Take only what you absolutely need on the trip — no gold or much cash at the hotel. – Carry anti-theft backpacks or money belts to safeguard your belongings.

5. Be Aware of Your Surroundings

Situational awareness is the single most effective tool for staying safe. Don’t spend time staring at your phone or wearing headphones that block out noise. Be attentive to the world and its inhabitants.

Do not take everything on faith – if it isn’t legit, it probably is. Don’t be scared to walk away from something when you are not comfortable.

6. Blend In with the Locals

If you pose as a tourist, you can be taken advantage of. Don’t be too extravagant, but stick to the classics. Don’t flaunt expensive gadgets, cameras or pockets of cash.

Learn some local words so that you can find your way around and speak to locals. It also shows respect for the culture, which builds stronger relationships.

7. Use Reliable Transportation

Find the quickest route at your destination. Take a licensed taxi, rideshare, or public bus on the advice of locals or other travelers. Take your understanding of the local traffic laws and driving conditions if you’re renting a car.

Don’t ride with strangers and don’t make any assumptions about your driver until you know that person is driving you.

8. Stay in Public Spaces

If you’re stepping in a cafe, restaurant or a large public space, you’re likely to meet more people (whether tourists or locals). Don’t say too much about yourself — where you’re staying, where you’re headed.

Drink wisely, as it is going to numb your brain and put you at a disadvantage. Leave your drink on display so it can’t be mucked up.

9. Carry Basic Safety Tools

Buy yourself a whistle, pepper spray (if your country allows it), or a tiny flashlight. They can keep you feeling secure and productive in an emergency.

Make sure to carry a small first aid kit, including bandages, antiseptic wipes, and painkillers.

10. Stay Informed About Local Scams

Scammers love the tourists, and watch out for scams in your country. They might be service jack-ups, guided tours or sneaky sideshows. Being up to date helps you to recognize and avoid errors.

11. Purchase Travel Insurance

It saves your life when you get caught off guard. It covers unforeseen medical costs, cancelled flights, missing bags, etc. You want your policy to offer solo-travel coverage and include the countries you will be traveling to.

12. Keep Copies of Important Documents

Be sure to bring both electronic and paper copies of your passport, visa, travel insurance and other documents. Replicate the copies digitally in a cloud or email them to yourself. This means that even if the originals are lost or stolen, you have them.

13. Stay Alert During Financial Transactions

ATMs inside banks or a designated area will prevent cards from being swiped or taken. Avoid sharing your PIN while making a transfer. Think credit cards instead, because they’re generally fraud-proof.

14. Technology for Safety

Travelling alone can be accomplished through Google Maps, offline maps, and translations. Apps like bSafe or Moonlight can also alert users to an emergency.

15. Be Open, But Cautious

Traveling alone is one of the best experiences, so be careful. Do not share too much of yourself, or take things you can get for free without checking that they’re authentic.

It’s a lot of fun to go on your own, but it requires planning and knowledge. With these safety precautions in place, you can leave your trip fully open-minded, confident that you’re prepared for anything that comes your way. Don’t back down, go with your instincts and don’t skip out on your solo adventure!

Going on a solo trip is a powerful and freeing experience.
